Don’t let the Winter Blues make you SAD
With the winter weather upon us, it’s more important than ever to take action to protect ourselves from the “Winter Blues”, otherwise known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). The change of season can lead people to become physically inactive, unhappy and isolated from friends and family. The good news is that there are many activities that can help us to keep mentally and physically healthy during the colder months to beat those winter blues – and it’s as easy as act, belong, commit!.
Make an extra effort to get outside; go for a walk, have lunch with friends or colleagues or sign up to a winter sport, it’s surprising how much better you’ll feel just by getting out of the house on the cold day. Research at Swinburne University recently found that it only takes 20 minutes of physical activity and sunlight per day to lift your mood. Local Act-Belong-Commit Project Officer Ben Hogarth says “Going for a stroll outside is a great way to get moving, create some warmth and helps to clear your head.”
According to Mr Hogarth the change in weather does not have to negatively affect our health, “Simply being active - physically, mentally or socially can help increase our mental health and happiness.” <MrHogarth suggests getting involved in local activities such as The Brighton Estate Residents Association is a great way to incorporate the A-B-C principles into everyday life.
